Residents of Indianapolis are fun-loving, spirited, and full of city pride. We love our hometown and there are so many things we do on a regular basis. However, there are also things you’ll never catch any of us doing. Never. Here are eight of them:
1. Raising children without taking them to the Children’s Museum.
Come on, it’s the world’s largest Children’s Museum! There’s so much to see and it’s fun for both kids and adults. There are giant dinosaurs... what more could you want? If you live in Indy, you’ve taking your kids here more than once.
2. Rooting for the New England Patriots.
This shouldn’t need to be stated at this point. Don’t wear a Tom Brady jersey. Don’t cheer for the Patriots. Not in Indianapolis. This is Colts territory, even if the team is going through a rough patch right now.
3. Braving the summer humidity without bug spray.
The heat of summer in Indianapolis comes with the added nuisance of high humidity, which brings with it a massive amount of mosquitos. If you’re out and about during June-August, you’ve got bug spray with you.
4. Dining at St. Elmo and not ordering the shrimp cocktail.
People who come here for the first time make special trips just to get this famous shrimp cocktail. If you live here and you’re dining at this steakhouse, there’s no way you order a meal without the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer.
5. Celebrating the holiday season without a trip to the Circle of Lights.
This is such a major part of Indy's holiday tradition. Christmas kicks off with the Circle of Lights downtown on Monument Circle.
6. Going to a Colts game without tailgating .
Rain or shine, sleet or snow, tailgating downtown before Colts games at Lucas Oil is a must. Burgers and hot dogs, local beer, good friends… how could you miss this?
7. Letting the extreme cold and snow affect our daily lives.
We don’t usually get harsh winters on the same level as places like Chicago and the Twin Cities, but we’re no strangers to snow storms and freezing temperatures. The extreme cold certainly won’t deter us from getting where we need to go, even if we sometimes wish it would...
8. Listening to any negative thing another outsiders say about our city.
For decades, people have called Indy boring, uninteresting, going as far as coming up with the nickname Naptown - which we took upon ourselves to turn from a negative into a positive. For anyone left out there who thinks they have any room to make judgements about our city, just look at that view. Look how far our city has come in recent years with our explosive food scene, our colorful culture, and our absolutely stunning architecture. Frankly, this city is underrated.
