Growing up in Connecticut means there are a lot of inside words and phrases that you only get if you’re a local. And not just on a state level… Towns can have their own insider location markers. Keep reading to find out if you’re a real Nutmegger!
1) The Center
Every town has their own specific location markers. In Weston, "the center" refers to the roundabout where the grocery store is.
2) Nor'Easter
This is not a storm or a blizzard. This is something much worse. In Connecticut, graduating in late June is normal because of all the snow days we get.
3) The Merritt
This isn't any regular highway. This is two lanes cutting through nature with uninterrupted speeding.
4) UConn
Everyone in Connecticut either goes here, or knows someone who goes here. They also had at least one teacher who went here and would actually wear their college gear during championships.
5) Fairfield
The greatest place in the state. If Fairfield is in it, it's cool. Shopping Center, Prep, Beach... They're all great!
6) The City
The city is always New York. But actually saying the name just isn't cool.
7) Off Peak
This means shorter lines and cheaper fares. We all have that friend who has the off peak times memorized. And we love them.
8) Lake Compounce
This is not a fishing trip. This is about riding giant wooden coasters and consuming ridiculous amounts of soda.
9) Trunk or Treating
You know, when everyone meets in the parking lot and trick or treats out of people's cars. Usually because the houses are too far apart or a hurricane just hit.
10) Iced Coffee
This is what fuels young Nutmeggers. We honestly don't understand why everyone is not obsessed with Dunkin Donuts. Even the minions are into it!
11) The Diner
Every clique has a diner of choice. And if it's too crowded, there are usually at least three more options just up the road. We're fans of 24-hour eating.
12) Vineyard Vines
We're not talking wine. When you see the pink whale you know they're probably from Connecticut. We love the prep.
13) Party in the Woods
Everyone has been to one. If they say they haven't, that means they were not only there but they probably did something embarrassing, too.
14) Stew Leonards
The largest dairy store in the world calls Connecticut home. This place has singing animatronic food, a petting zoo, and amazing soft serve ice cream.
So how did you do? Are you born and raised Connecticut or just stopping by? I'd love to know!
