The Centennial State is famous worldwide for its incredible, one-of-a-kind trails, but did you know that some of these paths are as historic as they are stunning? To experience one of these incredible hikes for yourself, check out the Old Spanish Trail in southwest Colorado:
Located near Grand Junction, the unique Old Spanish Trail spans 13.3 miles (round trip) of the original North Branch Trail and boasts both history and beautiful southwest scenery galore!
Originally running from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Los Angeles, California, the 2,700-mile Old Spanish Trail was a vital trading route for Mexican and American traders from 1829 to 1848 and consisted of 3 different routes, including the North Branch (est. 1848).
When you walk the Old Spanish Trail today, you will get to enjoy the same beauty that the original traders saw, including the stunning desert side, plateaus, and native desert flora.
Whether you walk, ride a horse, jog, or bike, you are guaranteed an unforgettable adventure along the Old Spanish Trail!
Please note: There is an elevation gain of 1,305 feet along the trail, so please use caution during your visit.
The Old Spanish Trail is accessible via Highway 50 and 28 1/2 Road, where you will find signs for parking and the trailhead.
