Southern California is a magnificent place to call home. If you've spent most of your life in this wondrous part of the country, there's no question you can relate to a few of these things that are uniquely SoCal. Whether you're a native to these parts, or you feel as though you've lived here long enough to call SoCal home, you'll want to take a look to see just how many of these side effects have become part of your life.
1. Becoming extremely spoiled by the amazing weather.
When you live in Southern California you don't exactly get to experience a real winter. Yes, the leaves fall in autumn and the temps drop slightly during December and January, but not to the same extreme as what the rest of the country experiences. After years and years of a mild climate, it's very hard for us to even notice the change in seasons because pretty much every season in SoCal is the best season of all.
2. Thinking that Mexican food just doesn't taste right anywhere else.
After years of eating amazing Mexican food in Southern California, you quickly discover that you can't find Mexican food that's anywhere near as good as what we have in our town. Whether it's a California burrito, a tasty fish taco, or a plate of homemade tamales, nothing comes close to the mouthwatering Mexican cuisine we have available in SoCal
3. Not wanting to leave home.
Why travel anywhere else when life in SoCal already feels like a vacation? People flock here every year for a getaway, but all we have to do is walk out our front door and it's a vacation in every direction.
4. Feeling the need to distinguish ourselves from Northern California.
Yes, it's all California, but with a state this large it's as if we are in two different parts of the country. As much as we love Northern California, we can't help but think we're the better half. I'm sure they think the same thing in NorCal, but we are pretty sure we're right about this one.
5. Developing a low tolerance for the cold.
After a lifetime of sunny days, our body temperature is not used to any major weather fluctuations. 72 degrees? No problem, we're good with that. But once it drops down to 60 we feel the need to bundle up. Even when it's hat and sweater weather in SoCal, you can always count on one thing -- we'll still be in sunglasses.
6. Becoming quite the foodie.
We are fortunate to have some of the best restaurants in the country located right here in Southern California. Whether it's a Michelin starred restaurant or a hole-in-the-wall Mom and Pop shop, we have grown accustomed to having access to some of the best food imaginable. From popular international dishes to California cuisine, we are constantly exposed to some of the most amazing food on the planet.
7. Turning into a farmers market snob.
Living in Southern California gives us all wonderful access to the freshest fruits and vegetables around...all year long. A weekly trip to the farmers market is a routine for many of us who have grown accustomed to buying our produce directly from the local farmers who grow them.
8. Taking "beach days" for granted.
We are fortunate enough to have the most pristine beaches here in SoCal that are easily accessible and always a joy to experience. Perhaps it's because we have such easy access to these beautiful spots that we forget how lucky we are to have beach days whenever we want.
9. Daydreaming about snow days.
With all this talk about weather and beach days, it's only fair to admit that we often daydream about snow days. So much so that we find ourselves seeking out snow when the winter rolls around. Whether it's a weekend away at Big Bear or a day away skiing down a snowy mountain, we often find ourselves needing a break from the sun just so we can bundle up in winter clothes for a change.
10. Owning an impressive flip-flop collection.
We really can't help ourselves when it comes to flip-flops as they're a staple in the SoCal wardrobe. We love having them in every color, style, and shape; we wear them dressed up just as much as we wear them when we are dressed in our casual clothes. And no matter what outfit we're wearing they are always the perfect accessory. So who can blame us for having a closet full of them? It just comes with the territory when you live in SoCal.
11. Believing that nowhere else in the world could possibly be as heavenly as Southern California.
Yes, we Southern Californians are biased, but for good reason. Where else can you spend the entire year playing outdoors, dining under the stars, splashing in the ocean, frolicking in the green grass of our many beautiful parks, and experiencing the most mesmerizing sunsets on the planet? Okay, perhaps there are other places where you can do that, but we're happy right here in SoCal.
