The Harry Potter universe is filled with countless imaginative settings — from the gothic castle of Hogwarts to the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands. While it would be amazing to fly to Europe to experience the magical locations that inspired the spellbinding book series, there are actually some very awe-inspiring places here in the U.S. that feel similar to scenes described in Harry Potter. Southern California alone is home to several beautiful mountain ranges — the Santa Ynez mountains near Santa Barbara, however, offer something very special.

On a plot of land surrounded by mountains sits the ruins of Knapp’s Castle. The original estate burned seventy years ago, and today, the area is a popular spot for hikers. With a fairly easy trail, breathtaking views, and the remains of a stone castle to explore, this hike to ruins in Southern California is well worth a visit.

To visit Knapp's Castle, follow the unmarked dirt road that's surrounded by the beautiful Santa Ynez Mountains.

What's left of Knapp's Castle sits at an elevation of roughly 2,850 feet. The view of the ruins is very picturesque and is a sight that could fit right into a fantasy novel.
