10 Perfect Places in South Dakota For People Who Hate Crowds
When you live in South Dakota, you don’t usually have to worry about huge crowds getting in your way, but there are places that can get quite cramped at times. If you’re looking to spend some quality time with those you love or even enjoy some solitude, here are our top 10 favorite places. These places also happen to offer some incredible views of Mount Rushmore State.
1. The Badlands National Park: Pinnacles Overlook.
This 0.2 mil leisurely hike to Pinnacles Overlook offers a spectacular view of the dramatic rock formations and flat plain land. This is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the Badlands, so be prepared to be impressed.
2. Farm Island Recreation Area, Pierre.
Farm Island Recreation Area is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet of the beautiful nature that surrounds you. Visitors can also take advantage of the 8-mile-walking, biking, and skiing trails.
3. Along the Mickelson Trail, The Black Hills National Forest.
This 109-mile-long trail winds through the gorgeous Black Hills National Park. Featuring plenty of restaurants, hotels, and places to stop along the way, you won’t be totally alone, but you will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy solitude among beautiful scenery.
4. Pactola Reservoir Recreation Area, Rapid City.
Spend a day exploring the largest reservoir in the Black Hills and relax among the gorgeous outdoors. Ice-skating, ice-fishing and cross-country skiing are wonderful wintertime activities offered here. The best part? You don’t have to worry about crowds.
