The Sapphire Lake In South Dakota That’s Devastatingly Gorgeous

South Dakota’s wilderness is truly remarkable – it offers a diverse beauty that is unique and special. The lakes here are particularly amazing, and this one is so devastatingly gorgeous that you’re never going to want to leave.

Sylvan Lake is a breathtaking lake at Custer State Park.

Between the azure waters and the stunning scenery, you'll never want to leave this beautiful place.

The lake is surrounded by huge granite formations.

It's full of fish - watch for them to jump. Or, cast a line and catch a few for dinner.

The water is really clear.

To really enjoy the lake, get right out on it. Explore the lake by paddling around in a canoe or kayak.

Sylvan Lake has a General Store that offers food and souvenirs.

Enjoy a tasty lunch here.

One afternoon isn't nearly long enough to enjoy Sylvan Lake, so stay the night, tucked into the trees at one of the 39 campsites here.

Take a stroll around the Sylvan Lakeshore Trail.

The one-mile loop circles around the entire lake. Most of it is flat, and easily accessible...

...But some of the path includes stairs...

...and stepping stones or other small obstacles. It's a beautiful hike that will work well for most explorers.

Walk under the suspended rocks... if you dare!

Watch for the bison herd that lives in the park.
