The Little Church On The South Dakota Prairie That Is Just Begging To Be Visited
The Chapel in the Hills. St. Joseph Cathedral. The Cathedral on the Prairie. South Dakota is chock full of stunning churches, but we are willing to bet you have never heard of today’s featured chapel, which is as beautiful as it is historic. Read on as we travel to the quiet South Dakota prairie and this surprising church:
Located in Day County is that of the Zoar Norwegian Lutheran Church; a traditional Gothic Revival church that is listed on the South Dakota National Register of Historic Places!
Built in 1904, the church once served Day County's many European immigrants, especially a group of Free Lutheran Norwegian-Americans who helped to found and organize the church.
Since the church itself was founded in 1893, its parishioners originally worshiped in local homes and schoolhouses, but managed to raise enough funds for not only the church, but on-property cemetery.
Despite its closure, this charming Norwegian church still stands tall over the beautiful prairie! You can see this historic gem for yourself by traveling down 4th Street in Eden.
