If you have ever had the pleasure of visiting, you know: Montrose is a small South Dakota town with a BIG personality. While many small towns often get a bad rap for being too small or not having enough to do, Montrose manages to be both fun and – dare we say – a little eccentric! Here is why it is impossible not to love Montrose:
Located along the Iowa/Minnesota border in eastern SoDak, Montrose is a tiny town of fewer than 500 residents, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in personality.
Platted in 1880, Montrose is still home to its original post office as well as several other businesses that you wouldn't expect in such a small town, like that of a community pool, community center, and even one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants.
In addition to all of the above, Montrose is also home to a few more surprises, like close proximity to a world-class golf course and the Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, plus other outdoor recreation opportunities via the bordering Vermillion River.
While all of the above is reason enough to visit, the best and most eccentric part of this surprising small town is the one and only Porter Sculpture Park!
Located just outside of town, the Porter Sculpture Park is the brainchild of a local artist and farmer who re-purposed old scrap metal and turned them into must-see works of art.
