If you’re on the hunt for a bit of a challenge that’s rewarded with unforgettable views, you can’t go wrong by following this trail in South Dakota. You might even add it to your hiking must-do list.
Come to Custer State Park well prepared, especially if you plan to hike the 3.6-mile Little Devils Tower Spur Trail, an out and back trail that's rated moderate.
You'll do plenty of climbing uphill and might face some tricky terrain, so be sure to wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes. Bring along plenty of water, too, especially if you're hiking on a warm day.
The trail can get really busy, and the parking lot can fill up quickly. Your best bet is to head over to the trail early in the day before the crowds arrive.
Shade is scarce along the trail, so, again, come prepared — read: bring lots of water. The most challenging part of the hike is at the very end, where you'll have to scramble to the tower's summit.
