It’s certainly true that South Dakotans are generally law-abiding, honest people. But even though the items on this list are mostly no longer enforced, they’re still technically laws that we don’t usually follow. Some things aren’t completely random and do make a LITTLE sense, but many leave us scratching our heads. Here are 9 things in South Dakota that many people don’t realize are illegal.

1. In Deadwood, it's illegal to mix an alcoholic beverage with another without a permit.

2. You're breaking the law if you use a throwing star in Sisseton.

5. It’s illegal for hunters to use a spotlight in South Dakota, unless they're hunting raccoons and need the light to keep track of their dog.

6. It’s against the law to create static in Huron.

7. It’s illegal to allow your dog to hunt big game, with the exception of mountain lions.

8. Every hotel room in South Dakota is required to have 2 twin beds that are at least 2 feet apart.

9. Horses are not permitted to enter Fountain Inn unless they are wearing pants.
