Experience Hands-On History At The South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center
We think that South Dakota has one of the most fascinating of state histories, and we love learning about it every chance we get! Do you agree? While history books and oral accounts are obviously informative, there is a better, more hands-on way to learn, which is by visiting places like the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center:
Located in Pierre, the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center (or the Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society) is THE place to go to learn about the Mount Rushmore State's intriguing history.
Open year-round, the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center is on a mission to "promote an understanding and appreciation of South Dakota's rich heritage and complex history" via an extensive collection of exhibits, programs, and special events.
When you visit, be sure to check out the Cultural Heritage Center's main-stay permanent exhibits, which include such themes as the South Dakota Experience, South Dakota in the 20th Century, and Oyate Tawicoh'an [O-ya-ta Ta-wi-cho-han] (or The Ways of the People).
In addition to these permanent fixtures, the Center also hosts numerous traveling exhibits and temporary collections, so be sure to visit often!
As if you needed another reason to visit, the Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society also offers several classes, presentations, and other special events, meaning there is always something new to see and do.

Admission to the Center is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors (60+), with free admission for ages 17 and under.
The South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day and Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Labor Day through Memorial Day.
