You know Fort Hays & Mount Rushmore Tours for its epic tours, Chuckwagon Supper & Music Variety Show, and all-new Buffalo Hunt Coaster, but did you know that it also houses the "Dances with Wolves" film set?
Open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. mid-May through October, the "Dances with Wolves" film set is free to self-tour and features the original buildings, mementos, and sets from the Academy Award-winning Kevin Costner film.
Set in the 1860s, "Dances with Wolves" tells the story of First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar, who is transferred to Fort Hays and befriends the native Lakota Indians before tragedy strikes and Union soldiers arrive with plans to take over the land.
In addition to the "Dances with Wolves" film set, Fort Hays & Mount Rushmore Tours is also home to the South Dakota Film Museum, which comes complete with displays of 50 different movies filmed in the Mount Rushmore State.
When you visit the set, be sure also to carve out time to explore everything else the Fort Hays & Mount Rushmore Tours company has to offer, like a Cowboy Pancake Breakfast, sightseeing tours, special workshops, and more.
