You’ll Want To Plan Your Visit To The Highest Town In South Dakota As Soon As Possible
At an elevation of 5,315 feet, Custer is the highest city in South Dakota, and the 12th highest in the nation. If you haven’t visited recently, you’ll want to plan a visit to Custer soon; it has a lot more than just elevation going for it!
The town of Custer was founded in 1875, after gold was found by the 7th Cavalry and Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Today, this beautiful town is a popular place to visit. It's surrounded by some of South Dakota's most spectacular scenery.
Visit the Custer County 1881 Courthouse for some Black Hills History. You'll find it at 411 Mount Rushmore Road. The museum closes during winter months and opens again in May.
South Dakota's most well-loved state park, Custer State Park is full of things to see and do. Wildlife Loop Road (shown here), Sylvan Lake, Legion Lake, and the Cathedral Spires are just a few of the best attractions.
