There is no better way to enjoy South Dakota’s vibrant fall foliage than on foot, as you can get closer to the trees and shrubs and also enjoy the feel of cool fall temperatures and the smell of fresh air. Are you ready to lace up your hiking boots and head out? Read on as we gush about this awesome fall hike complete with spectacular foliage:
Welcome to the gorgeous Roughlock Falls!
Located along the Little Spearfish Creek, Roughlock Falls is known for being one of the most beautiful waterfall hikes in South Dakota as well as one of the easiest, thanks to its 2-mile loop that is both easy to navigate and handicap accessible.
Featuring the jaw-dropping landscape that the Black Hills is famous for, the Roughlock Falls Trail is the epitome of western SoDak, thanks to its many trees, native wildlife, and lakes.
While the landscape is stunning on its own, it's the 50-foot-tall waterfall and smaller, intricate falls that steal the show!
While Roughlock Falls is worth visiting year-round, we think it shines even more during the fall when it is engulfed in vibrant yellows, reds, and oranges.
Please note: The Roughlock Falls Trail is open year-round but is best used between March and October.
Roughlock Falls can be found just beyond Spearfish Canyon Lodge on FSR 222. From Spearfish, the Falls can be accessed via 14A (Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway) to Savoy.
