This Eerie And Fantastic Footage Takes You Inside South Dakota’s Abandoned Bedrock City
If you grew up in South Dakota, there is no doubt that you have happy memories of visiting the nostalgic Bedrock City with your family (whether as a child or a parent). Sadly, this Yabba-Dabba-Doo of a place – which transported guests directly to their favorite Saturday morning cartoon – is no more, as the park closed in 2015 and, as of last year, all Flintstones-copyrighted remnants have been removed. While the park is no longer nearly as magical as it once was, we can still visit this “place right out of history,” thanks to this eerie and fantastic footage:
Located in Custer, Bedrock City was a 62-acre theme park and campground that was a favorite of families from both near and far.
Opened in 1966, Bedrock City paid homage to America's favorite cavemen (and women) and housed not only life-sized replicas of the Flintstones and Rubbles but their town as well.
During its peak, Bedrock City housed dozens of "modern stone age" buildings, including Bedrock City residents' homes, businesses like the Water Buffalo lodge and a working movie theater, and even an apt "Mount Rockmore" (pictured).
Sadly, Bedrock City closed for good in 2015 (ahead of its sister location in Arizona, which closed in 2019), and saw all of its Flintstone characters removed in 2019, leaving behind only the colorful buildings.
