For the first time in nearly a century, a total solar eclipse will be visible across the United States. This means that the sun will completely disappear for a brief period in the middle of the day, plunging the state into a bizarre few moments of darkness. South Carolina is right in the direct path of this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon.

On August 21, 2017, the Great American Eclipse will span from Portland, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina.

The moon will pass between the sun and the Earth, blocking the sun’s light for nearly an hour and a half total as the phenomenon passes across the country.
The eclipse will be visible across the state of South Carolina. Columbia and Charleston will be especially great places to view the show.

Unlike a partial eclipse, you can safely view a total solar eclipse with the naked eye.
Head outside at 2:40 p.m. to see the eclipse.
