Welcome to one of the few mountain-located state parks in South Carolina where the goal isn’t making a fast trek to the top of the highest point in order to see for tens of miles. (Although we love those parks, too!) Located in the bottom of a canyon, Jones Gap State Park doles out unparalleled scenic views from the bottom (and sides) of this mountain oasis.

The natural wood and stone visitor's center doubles as a nature and learning center. Inside, you'll find trail maps and more, including the secret, coveted locations of hike-in, creek side, primitive camping spots. You'll also find information about navigating all of the various trails that wind through this gorgeous mountain cove.
Whether you're just strolling around the park enjoying the multiple crossings of the scenic Middle Saluda River, or on a miles-long hike to see all of the waterfalls, a day spent at Jones Gap is one you won't soon forget.

Several waterfalls are located along the park's trails, including the tallest one in the state: Rainbow Falls. It's not a trail for beginners, but if you're skilled enough to make it to Rainbow Falls then the payoff is finding yourself at the base of this colossal natural wonder.
While exploring the canyon, you're sure to admire all of the bridges. The 72-mile Foothills hike passes through this state park as it winds through the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area.

It's an ideal place to regroup after spending some time on the trails. And yes, you can bring your dog as long as you also bring the leash.
One of the most difficult trails in the park is the trail to Hospital Rock. There are few images available of this famous boulder that is reportedly the size of a small house — and has a massive cave beneath it. Legends about the rock include Confederate soldiers hiding out in the cave. (Perhaps they were also sent there to heal?)

If you plan to spend the day hiking, then wear shoes that protect your ankles. That gorgeous and rocky creek bed of the Middle Saluda River seems to be replicated in the rocky terrain on the trails in the bottom of the cove.

Jones Gap State Park is located at 303 Jones Gap Rd., Marietta, SC 29661. It has more than 60 miles of trails, 18 primitive, back country hike-in campsites, and four waterfalls or cascades. The park is open year-round and admission is $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3 children ages 6-15; ages 5 and under, free. Park hours are: Monday -Sunday 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., during daylight savings time, and 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., the remainder of the year. Trails close one hour before dark, year round. Parking is limited, so it’s recommended you arrive very early in order to get a spot. Once the lot is full, you’ll be directed to another state park in the area.
