The Surprising South Carolina Town That Makes An Excellent Weekend Getaway
What comes to your mind when you think of Camden, South Carolina? If you’re a horse lover, then perhaps you think of the Carolina Cup, held each year in April. Or, perhaps if you’re a historian, then you think of Camden’s famed Historic Revolutionary War Site. And while both are equally good reasons to be reminded of Camden, South Carolina’s oldest inland city has so much more to offer. So much, in fact, you could go to Camden for a weekend getaway in South Carolina and still not see or do everything that’s available – but you can try!
Horse lovers and thrill seekers alike flock to Camden the first Saturday in April each year to take part in the annual Carolina Cup.
The streets and curbs are laden with restaurants, galleries, and shops of all kinds — like music stores, quilt shops, second-hand stores, antique stores, and more.

From April to November each year, you can head over to the Kershaw County Farmers Market in town.
It takes place on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and features fresh veggies and fruits plus handicrafts from local artisans.

Of course, any trip to Camden that doesn't include a stopover at the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site isn't really paying proper tribute to the community.
Located at 222 Broad Street, this 170-acre site is both informational and entertaining. Several events are held here throughout the year. Also, a stop at the new Revolutionary War Visitors Center just up the road at 212 Broad Street is a must as well.

Historians and those fascinated by cemeteries will relish a visit to the old Quaker Cemetery.
If you're in the mood to explore more of the area on foot, head approximately 20 miles north to hike out to the old Hanging Rock Battleground, the site of a very historic Revolutionary War battle.
The kayak/canoe trail is 3.9 miles out and back and initially crosses Adams Mill Pond before heading up Big Pine Tree Creek on a winding water path through submerged cypress trees.
All of this sightseeing will surely help you work up an appetite and luckily, Camden has plenty of places to satisfy a hungry appetite. Downtown, try Sam Kendall's.
