South Carolina has a long and fascinating railroad history, holding several records, even, including having the first railroad junction in the world, one of the first railroads in North America to be chartered and constructed, and providing the first steam-powered, scheduled passenger train service in the United States. From the small-town library housed in an old train depot building to the train museum in Winnsboro operated by volunteers, we are proud of this history and work hard to ensure it is well preserved. Now there’s even a caboose bed and breakfast room in South Carolina that you can stay in overnight!
The caboose bed and breakfast room is found at the Clevedale Historic Inn and Gardens in the upstate South Carolina city of Spartanburg.
The owners of the Inn added the railcar to the property after a visit by the daughter of the former owners of the home, when she shared the touching story of her birth with them. On that night, a train broke down and her father walked to the train and invited the passengers to his home for tea.
So this caboose, called The Mack Rail Car cabin, a vintage 1947 Southern Rail X654 Caboose, was transformed into a cozy space as a part of the Inn to honor its history.
The bunks area of the caboose – this was where the conductor and brakeman would stay. Many often added touches from home, including curtains and family photographs.
South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
