Waterfalls are near and dear to a South Carolinian. We’re equally blessed on both sides of our state – with the big blue ocean on the eastern boundary and the mountains on the opposite side. But when it comes to the best waterfall hikes in South Carolina, you may be surprised to learn you don’t have to go all the way to the Upstate to find one. They’re scattered from the midlands to the mountains and they’re all beautiful. Some of them are even hiking trails with waterfalls in South Carolina. With close to three thousand miles of tidal coastline in the state (including almost 200 miles along the Atlantic Ocean), there is surely a lot of sandy beaches to go around. It’ll be more difficult narrowing down which beach to visit than it will be to find one. From popular and busy areas like Myrtle Beach to small island beaches like Coligny Beach Park on Hilton Head, there is a lot to choose from if you are looking for family-friendly and activity-laden sandy getaways. For more quiet and less crowds, check out Edisto Beach, which is located about an hour outside of Charleston, where you are sure to spot some wildlife like turtles and unique fish. There’s also Sullivan’s Island Beach, which due to its lack of resorts and accessibility to public facilities, is a great spot to get some peace and quiet along 2.5 miles of Atlantic coastline.

And let’s not forget about the lakes in South Carolina, which take up about 1,100 miles of the state. There’s the massive Lake Marion, the largest in the state, which runs through five out of South Carolina’s 46 counties. Here, you can boat, swim, and check out the animal life, which includes hawks and alligators. Or there’s the 7,500-acre Lake Jocassee, which you might recognize from movies like The Hunger Games and Deliverance. There are ample fishing opportunities as well as waterfalls to explore here.
