Restaurants hiding in plain sight are the best kind. Underrated, unassuming, and no-frills are perfect qualities for a delicious dining experience, as far as we’re concerned. Case in point: the building in the photo below that looks like a convenience store. Replete with old advertising banners plastered all over the exterior, the structure looks at first glance to be a friendly spot to pick up a gallon of milk on the way home.
And sure, there's a sign way up top that clearly says RESTAURANT & BUFFET. It even says 'Voted Best Buffet' on the other end of the building. But would you necessarily see it while driving by?
Barn Express may look like a convenience store, but it's oh so much more.
Enter through the tiny store and then take a sharp turn toward the far wall to enter the best buffet in town.
If you have a weakness for southern fare, then you've come to the right place.
You have three options when dining at Barn Express:
Order the all-you-can-eat buffet and dine in, order the buffet to go and then pile your container(s) high with the delectable southern cooking, or order something specific from the extensive menu.
Barn Express is open seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. (breakfast) until 6 p.m. Monday to Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
And in the not-so-tiny town of Winnsboro (population, 3,500), it can get elbow-to-elbow in the Barn Express on a Sunday after church.
But the famously popular fried chicken, among other delectable options on the buffet, is worth the wait.
Other foods you'll rave about afterward are the sweet potato mashed, mac and cheese, pork chops, and the banana pudding pie.
For some reason, southern fare just tastes better when you're dining in a friendly atmosphere. The staff is always popping around to see if you need anything and to clear your empty plates.
The next time you're in Winnsboro or...
Just passing through over on Interstate 77, take one of the two Winnsboro exits and travel less than 10 minutes to one of the best low-key meals you'll ever have.
Southern buffets this delicious (and popular) are hard to come by – even in South Carolina. The Barn Express is open seven days per week. The buffet is served until 4 p.m each day. Learn more from the restaurant’s Facebook page , or give them a call at 803-635-4865.
