Don’t Let Summer Pass Without Visiting These 5 Rhode Island Islands
Have you ever tried to explain Rhode Island to someone who has never been? It’s technically not an island… but it has its own islands… oh, and its official name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, which is pretty funny since the smallest U.S. state has the longest official name.
But there’s nothing funny about our beautiful little islands, which, when social distancing is practiced, can still be explored safely this summer. When you have a day or two off to disconnect from life and explore, check out one of these beauties.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here: onlyinyourstate.com/nominate

Aquidneck Island is a large island in Narragansett Bay (Aquidneck is also known as Rhode Island, which isn't confusing at all). Not only is it home to Newport, one of the most beautiful cities in New England, but it has historic mansions, colonial homes, and lovely beaches to explore.

Goat Island is technically part of Newport, and it's fantastic. The island actually was used for goat herding for awhile in the 17th century, hence its name. These days, it's best known for the Newport Harbor Light, also known as the Goat Island Light.

Rose Island is very small, but somehow, that only adds to its appeal. There's not much to do here other than enjoy nature walks and take photos of the stunning Rose Island Light (one of our oldest lighthouses), but you won't mind.

Prudence Island is located in Narraganset Bay, and it's part of the charming town of Portsmouth. From its stunning seaside views to the canoeing and kayaking at Sandy Point, it makes a fantastic day trip destination.

Last but not least, make sure to head to our beloved Block Island this summer. It won't see its usual seasonal crowds, which is good, given current conditions... but the restaurants and cafes that are open could sure use your business.
