The Chanler at Cliff Walk is one of Newport's most historic properties, dating back to 1870 when New York Congressman, John Winthrop Chanler started construction on it (it was finished in 1873).

The mansion was built as a summer retreat for Chanler and his wife Margaret Astor Ward, who was the great granddaughter of the distinguished businessman John Jacob Astor. It has undergone quite a few changes since then, including surviving a fire in 1944. The current hotel has been open since 2003.
These days, the property is best known for its close proximity to Cliff Walk, one of Newport's top attractions.

The Cliff Walk runs for 3.5 miles along some of the most beautiful coastline in New England.
Of course, there's never a bad time to book a stay here, but winters are particularly delightful.

After Thanksgiving, things get a lot more festive around here.
