Horror movies have been filling movie theaters for decades. There is something absolutely spellbinding about watching what seems to be absolutely horrific and utterly impossible come to life on the silver screen. But what if the movie is based on a real haunting? Quickly things become much more chilling as you become even more riveted by the story.
You might be surprised to learn that the popular horror movie, The Conjuring, is reportedly based on a series of real events that took place in Rhode Island beginning during the 1970s.
The story begins when Roger Perron, his wife, Carolyn, and their five daughters moved into a Harrisville farmhouse in 1971. The family began noticing strange things right away.
At first, it was simply strange noises or objects that weren't in the same place that they had been left. But things quickly escalated into full blown chaos.
Pictures falling off the walls, doors slamming, and beds levitating off the floor was just the beginning of this real haunting. The family even felt spirits push and pull them inside the house, but the main focus of torment seemed to be toward the mother, Carolyn.
The Perron family believes that the worst spirit, Bathsheba, saw herself as the lady of the house and was not about to tolerate any competition for the position.
There was a real person, in the 1800s, named Bathsheba Sherman who lived on the property. She was accused of murdering one of her own children, although there was never a trial. Bathsheba was also reported to be a Satanist and now is buried in a nearby cemetery.
Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators were called to help the family deal with the evil spirits. When the film was made, Lorraine Warren was brought on set to make sure the authenticity of events was brought to the film. One event that was changed in the movie is the riveting scene where the Warrens do an exorcism on Carolyn.
Th Perron's oldest daughter reported that it was actually a seance instead of an exorcism where her mother began to speak in an unfamiliar language, her chair lifted off the ground and she was thrown across the room. After the horrifying seance, worried about his wife, Roger Perron kicked the Warrens out of the house. Due to financial issues, the Perron family remained in the house until 1980 when they were able to afford to relocate to Georgia.
