One-room schoolhouses are just about obsolete. But there was a time where they were standard for most students in the U.S., particularly in small towns. Rhode Island had plenty of one-room schoolhouses two centuries ago — and while none are in operation today, a few are still standing, including the oldest schoolhouse in America, The Southernmost School. But most Rhode Islanders never get a chance to see Read School, a charming little structure you’ll find on a back road in Coventry.
