For a small state, Rhode Island has a large number of magnificent libraries… we are home to the Providence Athenaeum, of course. But did you know we also have the oldest community library that still occupies its original building in the United States? The Redwood Library and Athenaeum is a must-see for book lovers everywhere. Not only is it packed with literature, but the building itself is beautiful.
Located in Newport, The Redwood Library and Athenaeum was founded in 1747, which makes it especially impressive that it still occupies its original space.
The building was designed and constructed by Peter Harrison, a colonial architect who is credited with bringing the Palladian architectural movement to the colonies.
While the building has obviously been renovated, remodeled, and expanded, you can still view the original entrance.
And aside from its classic literature and centuries-old books, this building has harbored a lot of history. It was used as an officer's club during the Revolutionary War.
You'll find newer books, older books, rare books, and even some original collections, although many of those have to remain on the property. There are circulating collections, special collections, and electronic resources.
If you have little ones in your life, take them to the Redwood Children’s Library in the Ballard Annex or the Young Adult Library in the Bernard and Sarah Gewirz Wing.
The membership benefits are seemingly endless, including access to all the library has to offer at no charge and free tours at 10:30 a.m. daily. You can even attend musical performances, author talks, films, and other events at discounted rates or for free.
