Old Canteen Restaurant In Rhode Island Has Truly Stood The Test Of Time

While it's always exciting to dine at a new restaurant, sometimes nothing but a classic, tried-an-true eatery will do. Since 1956, Providence's Old Canteen Italian Restaurant has been serving hearty portions of classic Italian cuisine in an elegant (and now vintage) setting. This place radiates old-fashioned charm, and the food happens to be fantastic.

You'll find Joe Marzilli's Old Canteen Italian Restaurant at 120 Atwells Avenue, where it has remained for over 60 years.

This makes it one of Rhode Island's longest running family restaurants.

As the name suggests, the restaurant was founded by Joseph Marzilli in 1956.

Joe was very kind and hospitable, and his family continues his legacy by giving their guests a warm welcome and endless hospitality.

The ambiance here is elegant but unpretentious -- it's great for both date night and family dinners.

The restaurant's location in the heart of Providence's historic Federal Hill is absolutely perfect as the neighborhood was founded largely by Italian-American immigrants and effuses a sense of warmth and community.

But of course, people don't come to restaurants only for the ambiance... they come to eat.

And luckily, the food at Old Canteen is as wonderful as the space.

The menu consists largely of Italian classics, like pasta dishes and seafood.

Go for a safe pick like Spaghetti Bolognese or Baked Lasagna, or try the beloved Snail Salad.

If you're a huge foodie (or just very hungry), you can go for the seven course complete dinner.

Of course, you're also welcome to order à la carte.

Save room for dessert here, even if you have to split it with a friend or two.

From tiramisu and cannolis to the homemade strawberry-covered Ricotta Cheese Pie, this is one course you won't want to skip.

The Old Canteen Italian Restaurant is open Wednesday - Monday for lunch and dinner.

They are complying with all safety and social distancing guidelines, and reservations are recommended.
