Spend a lovely spring or summer day exploring the Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge, a 295-acre natural space that’s brimming with meadows, forests, and wetlands. Its masterpiece is, arguably, the 11-acre Carr Pond.
While spring and summer are perfect for admiring the wildflowers, take a hike during the autumn too. Hikers give rave reviews for the rustic fall foliage.
The best way to explore this Rhode Island wildlife refuge is on the 3.3-mile Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge Loop Trail. While it’s kid-friendly, the scenic path does not allow dogs.
With its spectacular scenery, this Rhode Island trail can get quite busy, so be prepared to cross paths with other hikers, runners, and even local wildlife. Fox, deer, coyotes, and squirrels all call the wildlife refuge home.
