Rhode Island's Glass Float Project Is A Block Island Treasure Hunt You'll Absolutely Love

Remember searching for hidden eggs on Easter morning when you were little? You would find them under bushes and nestled in tall grasses. With each new discovery, you would emit a squeal of delight. In Rhode Island right now there is something similar going on but the prize is not an egg, it is something more coveted. Kids and adults alike will love this epic Block Island treasure hunt.

The next time you take a trip out to Block Island, be on the lookout for beautiful hand-blown glass floats. They are hidden all over the island like sparkling Easter eggs waiting to be found.

The Glass Float project begins in early June and continues throughout the year. There will be 550 glass floats placed on the island and not all of them are hidden at the same time. The treasure hunt goes on until all of the floats are found.

The hand-blown floats are about the size of an orange and each one is numbered, dated, and stamped with image of Block Island.

All, except 18, of the floats are clear glass. These rarer prizes are colored and one is entirely gold leaf. This fun expedition is finders keepers, but please only keep one float per seeker.

Search the beaches. On the island's stunning shores, you might find floats above the high tide line but never up in the dunes.

Look along the Greenway trails. Floats are only hidden one foot to each side of any trail.

Don't waste your time foraging around in the bluffs. You won't find any treasure there.

Don't go rummaging around on private property. The floats are all in public access areas. You will never have to dismantle a stone wall to find one, so leave those in peace too.
