While Ballard Park sits in the middle of the bustling city of Newport, it is often overlooked for the more popular attractions like the scenic Cliff Walk or the coastal gem of Fort Adams. The next time you’re in Newport take some time to enjoy this historic park that is a true treasure.
Donated to the city in 1990, the 13-acre Ballard Park sits on the site of a former granite quarry that operated actively from the 1800s up until the 1930s.
The stone that was excavated from the quarry was used in local streets and buildings. As you walk through Newport, know that some of the stone you see was taken right from the quarry where Ballard Park sits today.
The imposing rock face at the end of the park is the result of decades of quarrying. Until you see these man-made cliffs up close it's hard to put in perspective how massive they are.
Looking down from the top you'll see a lovely open meadow that's covered in daffodils in the spring just in time for the Newport Daffodil Days Festival.
Reach the peak and you'll feel like you're at the top of the world. But don't worry, you don't have to scale the rock face, there is a trail to get you up there.
