The Oldest Indoor Shopping Center Is Right Here In Rhode Island And It’s Stunningly Beautiful
Historical attractions abound in Rhode Island! While some focus on important times in our nation’s history from the Colonial Period to the Industrial Revolution, other places represent different parts of our culture. This beautiful historic building in Providence in particular has a fascinating past.

The historic Arcade was built in 1828 as the nation's first indoor shopping center and in 1976, earned its designation as a National Historic Landmark.

More than 180 years later, the beautiful building still stands almost completely untouched in downtown Providence.

In this rare photo you can witness the early construction of the city's "Superman Building." This really puts the Arcade's past into perspective as it predated many of Providence's more prominent buildings.

The building has stunning Greek Revival style pillars, classic facades, and impressive granite walls on each of its entrances on Westminster and Weybosset streets.

The first floor of the arcade is home to an eclectic array of local shops such as the H.P. Lovecraft store, and an amazing local bar known as New Harvest Coffee and Spirits. The second floor also offers luxury micro loft apartments.
