Old City Cemetery
The Old City Cemetery is one of Lynchburg’s most popular attractions averaging 33,000 visitors a year. The 27-acre public garden and ‘history park’ is home to five small museums that tell the history and stories of the 20,000 people buried there. One museum in particular, the ‘Pest House,’ made it on our ‘Weirdest Places’ list. While not too bizarre to those who love the medical field and the history, some might feel a bit squeamish when seeing the original surgical table, poison chest, asthma chair and chloroform mask.
Besides the Pest House museum you can also visit the Hearse House and Caretakers Museum, the Station House Museum, a chapel and the Mourning Museum, or just stroll along the 27-acres of serious history.
