We Bet You Didn’t Know That Pittsburgh Was Home To One Of The Steepest Streets In The U.S.

Pittsburgh is known for a lot of things, among them its hilly terrain and an estimated 712 sets of stairs. With all of the hills that comprise the landscape, it probably comes as little surprise – or none at all – that Pittsburgh is home to one of the steepest streets in the United States. At one time, it was the steepest street, but it lost that title not too long ago.

If you’ve been to the Beechwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, you’ve probably driven past Canton Avenue, the steepest street in the city.

The street boasts a 37 percent grade. If you’ve ever attempted to walk or to bike up Canton Avenue, you can attest to just how *steep* it really is, but is it really the United States steepest street?

Canton Avenue earns props as the steepest street in the *Continental* United States, but Hawaii lays claim to the steepest street in the U.S. Waipio Valley Road, in some sections, boasts a grade of 39 percent.

Even though Canton Avenue was previously crowned the country’s steepest street, it wasn’t recognized as such by the Guinness Book of World Records.

That doesn’t matter much, though, to Pittsburghers, and a sign on Canton Avenue still honors the street as the country’s steepest.

Canton Avenue may earn props as Pittsburgh’s steepest street, but it’s certainly not the only street that will get your heart pumping when you climb it.

Boustead Avenue boasts a 29 percent grade with Hampshire Avenue following at 23 percent. Both streets are also in the Beechwood neighborhood.
