Pack up the car with all of your camping gear for the leisurely journey to Sara's Campground in Erie, a two-hour drive from downtown Pittsburgh.
But, if you want to sleep on the beach, you'll have to arrive bright and early — at least by the time the campground opens at 9 a.m. — because you cannot reserve beach camping. (For the best results, call Sara's ahead of time to ensure you've got a chance of securing a spot for your tent.)
Once you've pitched your tent and settled in, you'll find plenty to do — or not do, if you just want to relax — on the sandy beach. Play an impromptu game of volleyball or basketball with other campers.
The beach campground also offers plenty of amenities — a playground, laundry facilities, a general store, Wi-Fi, a restaurant, and a souvenir shop, for example.
Each weekend also features a different theme. Missing Christmas? Then, plan to camp at Sara's the weekend of July 12, 2019, for Christmas in July. A stroll down Christmas Lane and a movie on the beach are among the planned activities.
And, if you're in the mood, explore the area around Sara's Campground, including Waldameer Park (which you might be able to see from the beach), Splash Lagoon, and Presque Isle State Park.
