11 Things Every Pittsburgher Wants The Rest Of The Country To Know
Pittsburghers – and those who visit our beautiful city – understand all that makes Pittsburgh such a unique and welcoming place. But, those who don’t live or who haven’t visited here might not understand quite as well. Here are 11 things everyone should know about Pittsburgh (most are positive but a few, well, they’re reality, right?)
1. We have clear blue skies.
Long gone are the days when thick smoke from the steel mills billowed over the Pittsburgh skyline. In fact, you might just discover that Pittsburgh's skyline is one of America's most beautiful.
2. We're fiercely loyal to our family, our friends, and our sports teams.
You mess with them, you mess with us. It really is that simple.
3. Family matters.
Pittsburghers are family-oriented. That means holidays, dinners, and every day events – like heading to a community fair – together.
4. Not all of us eat fries on our sandwiches.
Sure, Primanti Brothers may be pretty popular but Pittsburghers seem to have a love-hate relationship with the restaurant that popularized the concept of fries (and coleslaw) on sandwiches.
5. Snow doesn't scare us.
Okay, so maybe some people rush to the store for the mandatory bread, milk, and toilet paper at the mere mention of snow but for the most part we hit the roads and go about our normal lives even when the snow hits.
6. We, along with the rest of Pennsylvania, pay the nation's steepest gasoline tax.
And we're not too happy about it. Since January 1, 2017, our gasoline tax totals 76 cents a gallon and the majority of that tax goes to the state.
7. We pay a higher sales tax.
The majority of PA pays a six percent sales tax. Pittsburgh used to, too. A one percent sales tax, which was supposed to be temporary, was added in 1993 to help with the construction of new homes for the Pirates, the Penguins, and the Steelers.
8. We're opinionated.
Pittsburghers are strong willed and know what they believe. Read the comments on any local news station's Facebook page if you want to the passions of Pittsburghers.
9. We have our own language.
Pittsburghers can always tell when another person is from Pittsburgh. How? Even if they're not using the traditional Pittsburghese – yinz, jagoff, and Stillers – Pittsburghers still have a distinct accent. We can just tell.
10. We're proud of our city.
Every city has its pros and cons but the fact is Pittsburghers are proud to be from the Steel City. That pride is seen just about everywhere you look, even in our baked goodies.
11. We love showing our beautiful city off to visitors.
People don't really understand the allure of Pittsburgh until they've visited and experienced the city for themselves.
