14 Strange Habits Every Pittsburgher Will Defend To The Death
Pittsburghers do things their own way. What is is perfectly normal for a Pittsburgher may be seen as strange or offbeat to others. But, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Here are 14 habits of Pittsburghers that we’ll defend to the death.
During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.
1. Referring to others as yinz and…
We’ve got our own language – Pittsburghese, of course. And, the most common word we use is probably "yinz."
2. Calling someone a jagoff.
High up there in popular Pittsburghese terms is jagoff. Annoy us. Insult our favorite sports team. Pull in front of us without using a turn signal. All worthy of being called a jagoff.
3. Celebrating special occasions at the local fire hall and…
Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations. We celebrate ‘em all at the local fire hall.
4. Nibbling from a cookie table at wedding receptions.
While the wedding cake may still be the masterpiece of the wedding reception menu, another new tradition just might steal its spotlight or at least force it to share the spotlight. The cookie table is a uniquely southwestern Pennsylvania tradition.
5. Measuring distance in minutes and…
Ask us how far we are from anywhere – Station Square, PNC Park, or Shadyside – and we’ll answer in minutes, not distance. We’re about five minutes from PNC Park.
6. Giving directions using landmarks.
We don’t usually give directions using specific street names. Rather, we mention common landmarks like Heinz Hall, for example, to help you get where you are going.
7. Eating fries on our sandwiches and…
Okay, so not everyone is a fan of the concept of fries (and coleslaw) on a hearty sandwich. But, Primanti Brothers introduced and popularized sandwiches topped with fries and coleslaw and plenty of Pittsburghers love them.
If fries taste so good on sandwiches, surely they must taste delicious on other dishes, too, like salads, right? Thus, we have the birth of the Pittsburgh Salad.
9. Crawling through tunnels and…
For whatever reason – rational or irrational – we slow down and crawl through the tunnels, specifically the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. It’s just what we do.
10. Sitting in our parked car if you honk at us.
We may be heading to our car in a crammed parking lot. But, you’re not going to get us to pull out of our space faster if you honk at us. In fact, if you honk to make us hurry, we might just take even longer.
11. Sometimes criticizing the Burgh but…
We love our beloved hometown. But, we’re also aware of the problems and will criticize it from time to time but…
12. Never holding our tongues if you insult our hometown.
If you’re not from Pittsburgh and you insult our town, we will definitely say something. We can insult our hometown but you can’t.
13. Having more black and gold in our wardrobe than any other color and…
What other colors should fill the closets of Pittsburghers? We’re a black and gold town so it’s natural those are the colors we wear the most.
14. Being fiercely loyal to our sports teams
and our hometown.
Pittsburgh may not be perfect, but it’s pretty darn close to Pittsburghers. We support our town, our sports teams, and our fellow Pittsburghers – and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
grew up in Pittsburgh, you likely have developed some of the common habits of Pittsburghers. What other habits would you add to this list?
