9 Reasons Why Pittsburgh Is Actually The Best Place To Grow Up
Remember how fun it was to be a kid in Pittsburgh? Most of us likely grew up before the days of smartphones, laptops, and technology at our fingertips. Heck, we might have even had a black and white TV with rabbit ears. Growing up in Pittsburgh today is a bit different. But, there are some things generations will always share just because we grew up in the Burgh.
1. Chasing lightning bugs…
We always found plenty to do during summer’s endless days, from early in the morning until we went chasing lightning bugs when the sun went down.
2. Telling time by street lights…
We used to know when it was time to go in by the street lights. If we didn’t make our way home, we heard our parents calling out our names. Today’s generations may not enjoy that freedom as much as we did, but it sure did make growing up in Pittsburgh special.
3. Kennywood picnics and…
It was an annual event we all looked forward to. We chose who we would go to the school picnic with then, of course, we’d go shopping for our matching Kennywood outfits. Traipsing through the park throughout the day, we’d be thrilled to see our teachers outside of the classroom.
4. Local festivals and fairs.
Summer means endless days of playing outside. When June rolls around, the local festivals and church fairs start. That means good homemade favorites like pierogis, bounce houses, and plenty of games.
5. Snow delays and snow days…
Are the snow delays more or less generous today than they were when you were growing up? Either way, kids in Pittsburgh are lucky to have snow delays and snow days. They help us create perfect winter memories – making snowmen, having snowball fights, and creating snow angels – that we carry for the rest of our lives.
6. Field trips and…
Nothing beats a day off school because of snow than a day away for a field trip. Today, kids get to tour PNC Park, Heinz Field, Heinz Hall, and the Carnegie Science Center.
7. So much to do all the time…
Pittsburgh always has so much to do. From the kid-centric museums – like the Children’s Museum – to free events at the Carnegie Libraries, kids really don’t have a reason to be bored.
8. Community closeness and…
Pittsburgh’s all about community. Every kid growing up in Pittsburgh learns that from a very young age, one of the very best things about growing up a Pittsburgher.
Family’s a big deal in Pittsburgh. And, even if your close family isn’t here, your friends are your family.
