12 Things You Can Only Brag About If You’re From Pittsburgh
We Pittsburghers are incredibly fortunate to live in Pittsburgh, a diverse and beautiful city. So, forgive us if we brag sometimes. Here are 12 things all Pittsburghers can brag about.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we’re continuing to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, we don’t expect or encourage you to go check them out immediately. We believe that supporting local attractions is important now more than ever and we hope our articles inspire your future adventures! And on that note, please nominate your favorite local business that could use some love right now:
1. We live in The City of Champions.
No words needed on that one, right?
2. Our hometown has become a tech hub and…
Once the home to steel mills, Pittsburgh now boasts a thriving tech industry with such tech giants as Google, Uber, and Apple setting up shop in the area. In fact, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh is poised to have more than 200,000 tech positions by 2020.
3. A medical hub.
Pittsburgh's well-known for its healthcare industry, dating back decades. In fact, the world's very first heart, kidney, and liver transplant took place right here in the Burgh in 1989.
4. We’re the East Coast Hollywood.
When Hollywood looks for the perfect site for filming on the east coast, where do you suppose it turns first? That's right. Our beloved Burgh, of course. A long list of Hollywood films have been shot in the area, including Fences, The Fault In Our Stars, and The Avengers.
5. Pittsburgh boasts a rich history.
Pittsburgh's rich in history dating back to 1761. Most people are familiar with Pittsburgh's vibrant past in the steel and coal industries. But, the city also played significant roles in the Whiskey Rebellion and the Underground Railroad (of which there were several stops in Pittsburgh).
6. A vibrant present and…
Pittsburgh earned a spot on the list of the 25 Most Green Cities in the U.S. The tech industry continues to grow and millennials are discovering just how amazing it is to live in Pittsburgh. Things are looking pretty good in the Burgh, wouldn't you say?
7. A promising future.
The Burgh's always been a forward-thinking city and that's not likely to change anytime soon, especially with such esteemed universities - from Carnegie Mellon to the University of Pittsburgh - and the continuous growth of the tech and healthcare industries.
8. We’re popular with the tourists.
Last year was a banner one for Pittsburgh with Travel & Leisure naming the city to its 2016 list of Best Places to Travel and its readers named Pittsburgh one of their favorite cities in the United States.
9. Pittsburgh is the most affordable metro area in the country.
HSH.com named our beloved Burgh the most affordable metropolitan area in the United States in 2016.
10. We’ve got a pretty impressive food scene.
But, don't take our word for it. Pittsburgh sat atop Zagat's Best Food City list in 2015. Maybe the Burgh will return to the top of the list in 2017?
11. We’ve got America’s best ballpark.
If you've been to PNC Park you already know it's an amazing ballpark. But, the readers of Ballpark Digest confirmed that sentiment, naming PNC Park the country's best ballpark in 2016.
12. Pittsburgh is for lovers.
Love is in the air when you live in Pittsburgh with Amazon naming the city the country's 8th most romantic city last year.
