The Oldest Surviving Botanical Garden In The US Is Right Here In Pennsylvania And You’ll Want To Visit

Considering that Pennsylvania is one of the oldest states in America, it’s little surprise to anyone that there are so many fascinating pieces of history that are left lying here. But if you’ve grown tired of checking out local museums and other spots, then it’s time to get outside and enjoy some fresh air at this scenic destination.

Right in Philadelphia along the Schuylkill River is America's oldest botanic garden - Bartram's Garden.

This place dates back to 1728 when a self-taught naturalist by the name of John Bartram started the garden. The Bartram family enjoyed the grounds until selling the property in the 1850s.

The beautiful piece of America's history was made a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and continues to welcome visitors today.

Covering roughly 45 acres of land, you'll find plenty of places that make for the perfect picnic destination, and pets and bicycles are even welcome as well.

Open all year long from dawn to dusk and free to the public, there's nothing stopping you from crossing this gorgeous place off of your bucket list.

Something to also keep in mind? It's worth checking out Bartram's calendar to see what events are going on! Tomorrow on August 26th the garden is hosting its Saturday Walk-Up Boating where visitors can use boats provided by Bartram's and go for a 30-minute excursion along the river! Amazing, huh?
