The Oldest Bookstore In The Country Has A Frightening Secret
In a day and age where people are more commonly preferring electronic books as opposed to the real deal, we’re rapidly seeing the charm of local bookstores vanish right before our eyes. While many of us struggle to find a nearby shop or even big-box store that’s still dedicated to hardcover and paperback beauties, Pennsylvania has been lucky enough to be home to not only the country’s oldest bookstore but possibly the entire world’s.
Found in the Lehigh Valley in the city of Bethlehem is Moravian Book Shop, a bookstore that has been continuously running since 1745!
The shop was opened by the Moravian Church and specializes in Moravian Stars as well as year-round Christmas decorations.
While there's no arguing that this shop is the oldest one you'll find in America, it is often debated whether or not it is the oldest bookstore you'll find in the world.
Currently, the only other store it competes with is the Bertrand Bookstore in Portugal. The Portugal bookstore originally opened back in 1732 but after suffering terrible damages from an earthquake in 1755, the store was moved to another location.
One of the unique features of this bookstore is that you can find so much more than just books here.
Since it opened back in the 1700's, this store has acquired more square footage over the years. The bookstore now has not only books but a gift shop, gourmet food shop and deli! Many who live in the surrounding area love to come to Moravian's for their sweet treats.
So, what secret is this incredible bookstore keeping? It's home to a ghost!
The story you'll hear told by employees is that one night while closing up, a dark figure was seen going into the kitchen of Moravian's. The employees followed the spirit back into the kitchen, only to find a kitchen stove was left on. Those working at the bookstore believe this ghost led the employees back their to show them that the stove had been left on. What a friendly ghost!
While no one else has appeared to have had experiences quite like this at the bookstore, those familiar with the area are never surprised when they hear about this story. This area of Pennsylvania is often known for being the home to many different spirits.
Held annually, the independent bookstore holds Ghost Tours that will lead visitors on a one-hour walking tour throughout the city. On your tour you'll be shown places like local hotels, inns and cemeteries that have been known for their ghost sightings.
