This Historic Park Is One Of Pennsylvania’s Best Kept Secrets

Like this historic Pennsylvania park that promises a glimpse into the past and a monument to one of America’s Presidents. Tucked between Mercersburg and McConnellsburg, Buchanan's Birthplace State Park pays homage to James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States.
Spend a few minutes learning about President Buchanan, who was born in Cowan's Gap on April 23, 1791. And, he would later serve as President from 1857 to 1861.
Walk around the gated pyramid, made from local stone, that bears the inscription, "The incorruptible statesman whose walk was upon the mountain ranges of the law."
The monument, inspired by Buchanan's niece Harriet Lane Johnston, was completed in late 1907. By 1911, Pennsylvania had established Buchanan's Birthplace State Park.
