A bridge on U.S. Route 30 gives some drivers more than they bargained for. The George Westinghouse Bridge is a massive structure across Turtle Creek on the east side of the Pittsburgh metro area. The bridge was a feat of engineering when it was built and it’s still impressive all these years later. But if you look closely, you may notice that something is not quite right in this span. And it’s one of the most haunted bridges in Pittsburgh.

The bridge was named for George Westinghouse Jr., an engineer and entrepreneur from Pennsylvania. He was responsible for more than 400 inventions, including the air brake.

Westinghouse died in 1914, 18 years before the bridge would be built in his honor. The bridge was no small undertaking.

At the time it was built, the George Westinghouse Bridge had the longest concrete arch center span in the world. The bridge rises 200 feet above the valley floor and it stretches more than 1,500 feet. It cost $1.75 million to build, part of a $4.4 million Lincoln Highway re-routing project. It was a fortune for the time.

In later years, more people died here. There have been many vehicle accidents and some have taken their lives on the bridge - at one point it had one of the highest suicide rates in the country. Improvements were eventually made to the bridge to make it difficult for people to jump off.

The bridge is reportedly one of the most haunted bridges around, with numerous unexplained sightings of apparitions after dark.
