Oregon grows between 28 and 33 million pounds of the berries every year, and we’ve found plenty of ways to make good use of them. From tasty homemade jam to ice cream, we love to celebrate the marionberry, but one of our favorite ways to pay homage is with a slice of marionberry pie. You'd have to be living under a rock to not know about Oregon's marionberries. These berries were developed right here at Oregon State, in cooperation with the USDA. They're a hybrid blackberry, and they have a sweet, but tart taste that's more complex than other berries. Marionberry pie is a dessert staple in the Beaver State.
After three generations of berry farming in Salem, the Roth family opened Willamette Valley Pie Company, and they've been serving up the best marionberry pie in the state ever since.
