Take A Ride On The Steepest Four-Person Gondola In North America At Oregon's Wallowa Lake Tramway
Are you looking for an awesome Oregon adventure? The Wallowa Lake Tramway opens in late May every year, and we can’t wait to soak in the scenic views. The tram was the steepest four-person gondola in all of North America when it was built in 1970, and it’s right here in our own backyard!
For a day full of fresh air and adventure, head to Wallowa Lake to ride the tramway. You'll find it just south of the town of Joseph.
This area is absolutely gorgeous, but snow remains at the top far into the summer. Make sure to bring a jacket so you'll be comfortable while exploring at the top.
Hop aboard the gondola, and get ready for an incredible ride to the top.
The ride aboard this Swiss-engineered tram takes just 15 minutes, and it carries you 3,700 feet up the mountain.
The ascent is very, very steep. In fact, it's the steepest tramway of its kind in North America!
While you're marveling at the incredible feat of engineering at work, don't forget to enjoy views of Wallowa Lake far below, and the mountains all around you.
When you reach the summit of Mt. Howard, you'll be at an elevation of 8,150 feet, and the fun is just beginning.
Two loop trails at the top of the mountain lead to the most incredible views, so decide which to tackle first, and head out.
The trail to the Summit Overlook is the shorter of the two loops, and it takes you along a dirt path for just three quarters of a mile. There's a slight incline along the trail, but most visitors are able to navigate it.
The Summit View is just breathtaking! From here, you can see several other states, including Idaho, Washington, and perhaps even Montana.
Take the short spur trail to the Royal Purple Overlook, as well. The views of the Wallowa Mountain Range is beautiful.
After your hike, stop by the Summit Grill for a casual meal with a killer view.
Enjoy delicious burgers, sandwiches, and entrees, and sip a beer or glass of wine. At 8,150 feet, the Summit Grill claims to be the "Highest Restaurant in the Northwest."
During your visit atop Mt. Howard, you're sure to see some adorable furry creatures begging for snacks.
You'll never tire of these views, but the tram closes down at 4 p.m. in June and September, and 5 p.m. in July and August. On the way down, you'll be treated to the same sweeping valley views.
