Before cabin fever gets you down, head to one of these great winter destinations to stretch your legs and enjoy all the season has to offer. Spend some time outdoors, or snuggle by a blazing fire and celebrate the season the best way possible – by getting out into it!
1. Timberline Lodge
This classic Oregon lodge is the ultimate in winter getaways. The perfect jumping off point for all things winter, a trip to the iconic Timberline Lodge is a Portlander must-visit location, and winter is definitely the time to do it.
Bend is another winter wonderland hiding right in the middle of our state. Mt. Bachelor is the place to sled and tube, and with plenty of restaurants and bars, it is perfect for the whole family. And the drive there is one of the most stunning in the state, especially in the winter.
3. Hood River
Hood River is close to Portland and easily accessible in winter, making it a perfect destination. From there, you can easily head to the mountain, or stay local and snowshoe or cross country ski when there is snow on the ground.
4. Crater Lake
The drive is a bit further than most, but Crater Lake in winter is a must see. Grab a pair of snowshoes and see this majestic beauty in all its snow-covered glory.
5. Columbia Gorge
When the temperature drops below freezing, there is no better time to head to the Gorge and catch a glimpse of the frozen waterfalls. With several falls clustered into a short stretch of the Columbia River Highway, you can spend a day enjoying the amazing beauty of frozen waterfalls and take in all the winter temperatures have to offer.
6. The Coast
Watching a winter storm roll in is Northwest rite of passage. Snuggle by a fireplace and enjoy the view, or hike to the Heceda Head Lighthouse for something more active. A sunny day is perfect for a walk on the beach, and whale watching should always be on the agenda for a winter trip.
