10 Strange Habits Portlanders Will Defend To The Death
Our unofficial city motto is “Keep Portland Weird,” so it is no wonder we have picked up some strange habits along the way. Here are just 10 of the things that we Portlanders do that others may find a little strange on first glance.
If riding downhill on a kid's bike doesn't sound like your cup of tea, don't tell that to the crowds that do it weekly in Portland. This event, that takes place at night, involves riding down the Washington Park hill multiple times at top speeds and is a local institution.
2. Naked Bike Riding
Like Zoobombing, the Naked Bike Ride is an event in Portland that has a lot of participation. Drawing up to 10,000 riders annually, this event proves that Portlanders love biking and will take their clothes off to demonstrate its importance.
3. Adult Derbying
Hobbies are king in Portland, and not many are finer than the Adult Soapbox Derby. Racing handmade cars down Mt. Tabor is an annual tradition that draws a nice crowd for cheering the racers on.
4. Forgoing Umbrellas
We get plenty of rain here, and bringing an umbrella along is kind of a drag.
5. Inspired Donuts
Donuts are a food group in Portland and we have many shops that do them well. Whether you want bacon, liquor or your favorite childhood cereal on a donut, there are options for you here.
6. Take Our Dogs Everywhere
Why leave your dog at home when he can join you at the bar?
7. Let Someone Else Pump Our Gas
In Portland, we sit in our car and let someone else pump. Although "let" is not quite the right word. It is actually illegal to pump your own gas here.
8. Wait Hours For Brunch
Brunch is a weekend tradition and we will wait in lines for hours at the right spot.
9. Eat on The Go
Sure lots of people eat on the go. That is what fast food is meant for. But in Portland, food carts are the best place to get your quick food, and we love them so.
10. Combine Strange Flavors
We love interesting combinations in Portland. Ice cream with olive oil, goat cheese, or habanero? Bring it on says Portlanders everywhere.
