5 Fantastic Factory Tours You Can Only Take In And Around Portland
If you are looking for an educational activity, these factory tours are a fun way to get out of the house and learn something new. While you are there, pick up some of the factory’s products and have a new found appreciation for how they are made.
1. Bob's Red Mill
Join a Grain Guide at Bob's Red Mill to learn about the process of all things grain from farm to table. This fun, interactive and free tour is great for all ages. Tours begin at 10 am Monday through Friday, and during the summer season (June 5 - September 1), an additional tour at 11:30 am takes place. Bob's Red Mill is located at 13521 SE Pheasant Ct, Milwaukie, OR, 97222.
2. Franz Bakery
Franz Bakery is a perennial favorite of school groups, and aroma of bread baking is definitely hunger inducing. The tour includes information about how bread is made, and then a tour of the factory, looking at the dough being mixed, bread baking, and finally, packaging. The tours must be scheduled in advance, and can accommodate groups of 10 to 60 people. If your group is smaller, you can often join another group, but reservations must be made in advance. The free, 30-minute tours take place during the school year, from Labor Day through June at 340 NE 11th Street.
3. Widmer Brothers
Instrumental in turning Portland into the craft brewing epicenter that it is today, Widmer Brothers Brewing offers several tours weekly to give you a behind-the-scenes view at their process. Tours take place Monday though Thursday at 2 pm, Friday at 2 pm and 3 pm, hourly from noon to 3 pm on Saturday, and at 1 pm and 2 pm on Sunday. Tours cost $5 and take place at 929 N Russell Street. Reservations are required.
4. Creo Chocolate
If you have a sweet tooth, this chocolate factory tour is the place to head. Factory tours include making a chocolate bar and start at $15. Reservations are required and the tours take place at 122 NE Broadway.
5. Pacific Hazelnut Candy Factory
Head down to Aurora to tour this hazelnut and candy factory for a taste of the sweet life. Pacific Hazelnut Candy Factory offers tours January through September, and charges $3 to cover the cost of hairnets, but this is reimbursed with any $6 purchase from the store. Tours are by appointment only at the factory, located at 14673 Ottaway Rd NE
Because these are working factories, you are going to need to lace up a pair of closed toe (and back) shoes before heading out on your factory tour. Call ahead and make a reservation, and have a great time learning about how your favorite foods are made!
