The trail starts off similar to many local hikes in a typical scene from any Pacific Northwest forest.

Take the Shelter Loop Trail until it intersects with the Marquam Trail and turn right to follow the path towards Council Crest.

You will leave the park and traverse through the Southwest neighborhood for several blocks before beginning the climb to the peak.
