Perched high on Mt. Hood at an elevation of 6,000 feet, Timberline Lodge is a beautiful spot for a quick summer staycation.
The lodge was built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed this stunning building, which was constructed using heavy timber and boulders from the area.
For more challenging hikes, hop on the Pacific Crest Trail. You might meet some thru-hikers along the way, but you'll probably want to turn around and head back to the lodge at some point (the entire trail stretches 2,650 miles!)
Mt. Hood is a mountain biker's paradise. The Timberline Bike Park offers trails for riders of all abilities, and you can access it by taking the lift up. You'll need a lift pass, helmet, close-toed shoes, and a bike with both front and rear brakes.
The Gravy Train Trail is an easy, 4.5-mile-long trail that's perfect for beginning mountain bikers and families, and it's just one of many trails you can explore on the mountain.
Did you know that you can ski on Mt. Hood in the summer? It's true! The Palmer Snowfield has terrain that's suitable for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders, and it's open for skiing from June through August.
Summer is the only time you can ski the Palmer Snowfield - it's too difficult to maintain the Palmer Express chairlift with 100 mph winds and freezing temperatures up there during winter months.
Of course, you don't need to mountain bike or ski to enjoy the scenic view from a chairlift here. Hop on the Magic Mile Chair Lift to glide up to 7,000 feet. Soak in the views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson, and the Palmer Snowfield along the way.
